So, sit back and relax, as your dream wet room design takes shape…

What is a wet room?

Before we delve into our favourite wet room ideas, it might be beneficial for you to know what a wet room actually is. Simply put, a wet room is an open plan style where the bath is removed and replaced by a shower area. What’s more, everything within the room is all on the same level.

Wet rooms often don’t have a separate shower tray and are usually completely open, meaning that you can walk directly into it. No matter what bathroom design you choose, here at Boro Bathrooms, we can make your wet room dreams a reality!

Don’t forget to visit one of our showrooms in Rochdale or Bury and check out our modern designs in person.

Our modern wet room ideas

Now you understand what a wet room is, it’s time to get some inspiration. As we head into a new year, wet room design ideas have been revolutionised. Given the popularity of so many wet room designs, we understand that it can be hard to know where to start.

Below, we’ve got ten of our favourite modern wet room ideas that you can take inspiration from, whether you’re moving house or simply having a bathroom refresh. However, don’t forget to check out our gallery for further ideas!

Let’s have a look at them in a bit more detail…

1. Consider underfloor heating

Here at Boro Bathrooms, we’ve got years of experience in bathroom heating. For a wet room in particular, underfloor heating can be a great investment. However, it’s worth noting that a wet room is different from a typical bathroom – water can end up splashed everywhere so ventilation and heating become much more important.

In a wet room, water can cool quickly and spread across the floor, leaving you and your floor wet and cold. Underfloor heating is therefore a great way to solve any potential problems that you might face when purchasing one.

2. Move away from traditional tiles

Another one of our wet room design ideas is to consider what tiles you use. Although we love traditional bathroom tiling, modern wet room ideas can give you the opportunity to move away from the classic look or mosaic tiles. Consider using different materials for your walls and floor, such as marble or ceramic.

Natural stone masonry can be a showstopping feature for your shower wall, and porcelain tiling is equally as attractive. For advice on tiling your bathroom, check out our blog for more information.

3. Choose the right vessel sink

A vessel sink is a sophisticated twist on your classic bathroom feature and a great function for any wet room. These sinks appear as free-floating, as they’re not actually built into a cabinet. An integrated sink is equally as impressive, but the visual impact of a vessel sink is unmatched.

You can choose vessel sinks that are made of polished granite or mandarin stone, both stylish and fashionable designs that will make for a showstopping wet room that features less clutter.

4. Don’t forget about the bath!

While a bathtub is often forgotten about when it comes to a wet room, you might be craving a relaxing soak. Luckily, there are cost-effective solutions that can help to enhance your wet room space.

For example, a corner bath is a relatively small investment and use of space but can be a highly valuable one. Many wet rooms aim to be accessible, and adding a sit-down bath removes the pressure of standing up in a wet room shower.

5. Introduce contrasting colours and finishes

In a wet room that’s typically filled with consistent tiles, you might want to add contrast to the space. This can add visual interest to the room and reflect your own unique style. Whether you want to add a pop of colour or incorporate a statement element, there are endless possibilities.

Bathroom expert at Boro Bathrooms Joe Bargh’s top tip for adding contrasting colours to your wet room: “The stark contrast between black and white features is simple yet elegant, allowing you to play around with textures and materials. Try opting for classic checkerboard tiles that will ooze timeless glamour!”

6. Integrate a built-in seat

We’ve talked a lot about accessibility, and what’s more accessible than a built-in shower seat? Not only is it incredibly handy, but it also adds a luxe appeal, especially if you’re aiming to recreate a spa-style space.

A wooden seat can offer a holistic, relaxing experience, but make sure that you ensure any timber is treated so that it’s suitable for a wet area. Or, you can easily mimic the look with tiles. Just make sure that they have a non-slip treatment and are comfortable to sit on.

7. Create a spa-like sanctuary

Another of our wet room design ideas is to embrace the spa theme. Having a wet room in your home instantly adds a level of luxury, instantly making the space feel seamless and bigger than it is. You could add a bath, a vanity unit, and a smaller wet room-style cubicle to enhance the spa experience.

Don’t forget to add pleasant smelling candles and reed diffusers, and you can even opt for a rainfall showerhead for a more immersive and luxurious shower experience. A sleek and modern design, a rainfall showerhead will help to create the illusion of a spa within your own bathroom.

8. Make sure there is sufficient light

Did you know that lighting choices can actually affect your mood? Because of this, you might want to make use of as much natural light as possible, especially if you’re feeling inspired by tropical climates such as Bali or Thailand. Adding a huge skylight creates the illusion of showering outdoors while providing an abundance of natural light.

If a skylight isn’t an option, you can of course be creative with lighting fixtures and other lighting elements. Think carefully about mood and task lighting – where you place these will depend on your natural light sources, too. Due to the nature of wet rooms, you’ll need to be careful with how your light sources are wired to ensure that they are as water-tight as possible.

Wet room FAQs

What’s the difference between a wet room and a walk-in shower?

There are a few key differences between a wet room and a walk-in shower. In a walk-in shower room, there is a clear separation between waterproofed areas and areas that aren’t waterproofed. While both can have a shower screen that divides the space, walk-in showers are often elevated from the ground to make way for the shower tray.

Essentially, a wet room is a totally waterproofed space, much like a watertight box! Whereas a walk-in shower is only a small portion of the overall bathroom.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wet room?

Like many bathroom installations, there are advantages and disadvantages. However, we believe that a wet room offers more pros than cons!

Advantages – they are practical and accessible, and can cater to the needs of the elderly or those with disabilities. They’re also a guaranteed investment, returning a better profit in future sales.

Disadvantages – if your wetroom is installed with the incorrect drainage capacity, your bathroom may be at risk of flooding. A bad floor slope can also cause discomfort and dysfunctional uses.

How much does it cost to fit a wet room?

The average cost of the professional fitting of a wet room ranges from around £4,000 to £12,000, depending on the size and quality of the features within. Labour only is much cheaper, averaging at around £250.

However, we recommend contacting our team who can assess your specific design requirements and provide you with a more reliable quote!
